UNDER THE KITCHEN SINK

This space often gets overlooked. And on top of that, it is a tricky space with the pipes and disposal. It’s easy to live with it disorganized and cluttered, and not think much about it. But goodness is it satisfying when it is nice and organized! I think the key is to have everything visible. That way, you have a clear inventory of the items you have on hand. When I cleaned out under the sink at the start of this project, I found three dry agents and two almost-empty packs of dishwasher pods… and I had no idea I had any of them because they were shoved in the back.

  1. Measure your dimensions and account for pipes, disposals, and awkward angles. It is ideal to maximize this space, especially if you have a small kitchen with limited storage; however, I opted for having a little bit of dead space in the back on the right side because any items behind our paper towels and the drawer containers would not be visible. And for me, “out of sight, out of mind.”

  2. Take everything out and clean the space. Take inventory of what items you have and consolidate items if possible. I also like taking items out of the boxes to put in the drawers, such as sponges, dishwasher pods, and Mr. Clean erasers. I can see them easily and I think it is visually more appealing.

  3. From the items you have left to put under the sink, decide on containers to organize the products. *I prefer to hold off ordering products until I know what I have to back in the space (see my earlier post- Organization Process ). This project was a perfect example of why I hold off ordering products- I initially planned for three drawers high by two drawers wide on the right side, but after taking inventory of what I have, I did not have anything to put in the two extra drawers so it would have been a waste of money.

    Here is what I used:

    • Clear, stackable drawers (4 1/2 in. tall, come in set of two) (linked here)

      • These also come in larger drawers, which I have used elsewhere, 6 3/4 in. tall, and also come in set of two (linked here)

    • Clear, storage containers for larger items and cleaning supplies (linked here)

    • Also, one of my favorite Amazon finds of 2020 is my over the sink, roll-up drying rack (linked here) (Make sure to measure your sink because it comes in two sizes!)
