LINEN CLOSET ORGANIZATION

For this space, I took everything out, categorized/donated/threw away what I could, relocated items that did not belong, and put the items back into the closet. That’s it. I did not buy any products. I did not put every item or category in a corresponding container. I wanted to make this a simple, easy project that I could cross of my list… and eliminate the risk of opening the door and having items fall on top of me. Linen closets are an easy place to collect odds and ends and hide messes (see my before picture for a perfect example of “stuffing things in a closet”). But simple categories, such as sheets, towels, blankets, and pillows, can be easy to sort, match, and categorize. (Side note- if anyone has mastered the art of folding a fitted sheet, can you give me tutorial? I’ve watched videos and read tricks and still cannot make it look like I wrapped it around my arm and threw it on the shelf.)

Organization projects do not necessarily mean you have to spend money on products. Cleaning out and reorganizing are critically important and sometimes that is all a space requires to be organized (or honestly that might be all of the time, effort, or budget you are willing to dedicate to a particular space). Organization can be overwhelming. And a simple clean out and “straightening up” can be an easy way to get started.

I love putting everything in a similar category in one location. For example, we (normally) travel a lot, so we have a million suitcases and travel items (i.e., duffle bags, travel headphones, neck pillows, travel organizers). When I cleaned out this closet, I had extra space that I decided to use for all of our suitcases and travel items. Now, they are all located in a centralized place instead of scattered throughout the house. And since we are not traveling at the moment, it made sense to use this closet to store all of these items. If things change, I can always reorganize and create a new system that works for our travel schedule. Which is a great reminder about organization: if a system does not keep you organized, then change it! An organizational system does not have to be forever, only as long as it helps you and makes your life easier.
