WHY NOT DIY?

When I started Mrs. B. Organized, I did not intend to jump into the DIY world. I knew I would do some projects myself, but I did not imagine I would learn how to use a table saw, or watch dozens of how-to videos on how to install a new ceiling light, or know what a pocket hole jig is, or even know the IKEA store layout as well as I know my grocery store. My initial hope was to show practical ways to reduce stress through organization and help others create systems to maintain an organized life. And that is still my goal… just recently a little more novice DIY content.

I love creating projects and bringing my vision to reality, especially projects that make life easier through organization. But several factors have pushed me out of my comfort zone and into DIY to keep my life organized and continue my vision for Mrs. B. Organized.

  1. PANDEMIC. Life changed and life for everyone was/is full of many unknowns. A lot of the organization topics I had envisioned became inapplicable to the life these days (I am still keeping a few topics on the back burner for a later date though). For me personally, my routine and schedule were turned upside down, causing me to shift my attention and focus in several areas of my life.

  2. CONTRACTORS. In our town, it is almost impossible to hire a contractor for small projects right now. They are booked for months and the demand is so high, some contractors only agree to large-scale projects. So the options are wait a while or do it yourself.

  3. OUT OF STOCK. Many furniture items are out of stock. Many items are getting delayed in production and in transit. This has also led to my IKEA hacks and projects because (for the most part) products are in stock, budget-friendly, and customizable with some additional effort.

  4. BUDGET. I try to operate on a budget for each project. And the reasons above could easily lead me to exceed that budget. Sometimes it is unavoidable to go over budget, but I try very hard to keep costs low and avoid superfluous costs, which again sometimes means I have to do it on my own.

All of my projects still focus on organization, I just have to roll with today’s circumstances and be a little more creative and hands on. A few months ago I felt a little stagnant. I had so many ideas but it seemed like something always hindered the execution. Then, it dawned on me… Why not DIY? Just because you haven’t done something, doesn’t mean you can’t. And I guarantee you can find someone on Instagram, Pinterest, or Google, that has done something similar to your idea and put the details on the internet. Gosh, go for it. Explore your ideas. Learn something new. Challenge yourself.

I hear often, “getting organized is daunting and overwhelming.” Or “organization is intimidating.” And yes, it is all of those things. Especially if you try to get your whole life organized in one weekend. It takes time and constant effort. But it also requires a starting point. Think about what you want to organize and come up with a plan. Get out of your comfort zone and try something new. Do it yourself. You might be amazed at what you accomplish.

(Full disclosure, I feel like I should include a “mistakes” section, or maybe “things not to do,” on my Instagram or at the bottom of each post. Because, believe me, I have made a million mistakes so far. And just like everything on the internet, everyone else makes its look so easy.)
